Welcome to the Bachelor of Engineering - First Year. Your first year studying the Bachelor of Engineering is an exciting, challenging time, and your first step towards a rewarding and satisfying career in engineering.

If you have a clear career path in mind, you can specialise in an area of study e.g. Chemical, Mechanical Engineering from the beginning. However, if you are not sure, you can choose a general study plan in your first year to help you decide.

Orientation

Students should attend the Engineering Welcome and see your Orientation Guide for further details of activities and events in Orientation Week

Choosing your BE specialisation

You can enrol directly into your BE specialisation/plan at the beginning of Year 1. Each specialisation includes a choice of electives in Year 1 to develop your particular interests.

If you are unsure of your preferred engineering specialisation, you can keep your options open by enrolling in one of two General Year 1 study plans. As shown below, each will direct you into a different range of study areas/specialisations.

At the end of Year 1, you are required choose a specialisation. Please nominate this Plan through mySI-net. Irrespective of your choice of Year 1 program (specific, General Plan A or B), you can switch to any engineering specialisation in Year 2. However, changing your choice may incur a slightly greater than normal workload in later years.

Choosing your First Year courses (both semesters)

The recommended Year 1 study plans are available here (pdf). Once you have chosen your specialisation or General Study Plan for Year 1, you need to select your courses. You must complete the compulsory courses for your study plan, and then select appropriate elective/s.

Creating your timetable

A summary of the BE Year 1 timetable (with special notes) is available here.

Now, you’ve enrolled and you have selected ‘Timetable Home Page’ > ‘Classes – List View’ within mySI-net. This may look quite overwhelming.
*The ‘Classes – Weekly View’ does not contain information on week patterns.

Here’s a quick guide to reducing it to something manageable.

Basic rules

Wherever there is a class type (L, P, W etc) followed by a number – P1, P2… P11 – this means that the same material is repeated several times; and you choose ONE group (e.g. P2) and ignore all the others (i.e. ignore P1, P3-11). We provide attendance options as it is not possible to teach 900 BE students at the same time.

Wherever there is class type only – L, (not L1, L2) – this indicates that all students in the class attend all session/s.

Please ensure that you read the “dates taught” and “dates not taught” as some classes do not require attendance every week. (Check the course profile or Blackboard for further details.)

Your timetable

  • List your course codes: E.g.  ENGG1010, MATH1050, CHEM1020, ENGG1000.
  • Look at the structure for each course, for example: ENGG1000 has two lecture streams (L1 & L2); Workshop (W); Project (P); General Class Contact (C). You will attend one group only for each of these.
  • We suggest that you map in your lectures first (as these are usually in the morning), then your practicals, tutorials and other classes. For example:

Highlight all lectures for ENGG1010 and CHEM1020.

Choose one lecture stream (L1 or L2) for ENGG1000 and MATH1050, and highlight these classes on your timetable.

Read the notes below for guidance in choosing practical & tutorial groups in year 1 classes.

Special notes for Semester 1, 2009

ENGG1000

Choose the same afternoon for Project (P), Contact (C); and Workshop (W).

ENGG1000 P (Project) class: occurs weeks 3-13; choose by topic & sign-on.

ENGG1000 C1-5: occurs in week 5 only. Library session (compulsory) – you will be rostered out of your regular Project class for 1 hour. No sign-on.

ENGG1000 W1-5: occurs in weeks 1-2 only: Graphics workshops (optional). Please sign-on.
Whilst we recommend that you attend SAME afternoon as your project class, this will not be possible for everyone.

Excel classes (optional): You will receive separate advice regarding these. (Not on timetable).

ENGG1010

All students attend all lectures (3 x 1 hour). The 12pm lecture on Monday is NOT a repeat of the 8am lecture.

Wednesday lecture (5-7 pm) is held on ONE week only = mid-semester examination.

Tutorials (T1, T2, T3): Choose one group. Held weeks 2-13. Sign-on.

Contact session (C1, C2, C3): Choose one group. Held weeks 2-13. Sign-on.

Practical group (P1-P13): Choose one group. Each prac group attends on four afternoons only. (Please read the ‘start – end date’ and ‘dates not taught’ carefully on SI- net.) Sign-on.

Sign on for ENGG1010 tutorials, contacts and prac classes. You will be notified of dates.

ENGG1050

Environmental Engineering students should do ENGG1050 in Sem 2 as BIOL1030 and CHEM1020 are required in Semester 1.

MATE1000

Choose the same afternoon for Practical (P) and Contact (C) sessions. See Blackboard for details.

Practical (P) class: requires 3 afternoons, plus an additional afternoon for an introduction to the UQ Mine (C series).

Tutorials (T) - check week patterns on mySI-net.

Mechatronic Engineering students should do MATE1000 in Sem 1, and ENGG1010 in Sem 2.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering students should do MATE1000 in Sem 1, so electives are open in Sem 2 (e.g. PHYS1002).

MATH1051 (& MATH1050)

MATH1051 - Stream 2 available to most students; Stream 1 depends on electives chosen (MATH1050, biology or PHYS1171).

MATH1050 & MATH1051 - Chemical & Biological students must do Stream 1 of MATH1050/1051 to allow for CHEE1001.

Science enrolments are restricted to the following semesters for BE students:

Semester 1 – BIOL1020, BIOL1030, CHEM1020

Semester 2 – BIOL1040

Electronic Sign-On

Where there are multiple attendance options for classes (lectures, practicals, tutorials etc) you may be asked to sign-on electronically to the group of your choice (e.g. L2, P5, W3). For most courses (e.g. ENGG1000, ENGG1010), you will receive an e-mail advising you when this facility is available.   It is also worthwhile checking this information within mySI-net.

Further information

For further information on individual courses please consult the Course Profile when this becomes available. The link within mySI-net will give you full information regarding assessment. Please note that the public link (www.uq.edu.au/study > choose course > profile) omits some information.
