Engineering
Design

ENGG1100 (Engineering Design) is a compulsory foundation course for all UQ engineering students and introduces students to the way professional engineers think and work.

A significant learning component of the course is built around a major team project.  You will work on this project in a team of five to six students.  There are four possible projects and each project is linked to a particular practical group which meets one afternoon per week.  You will find out much more about the team project once semester starts.

What to do?

Sign-on for the practical project of your choice before the start of semester. (See Step 4 of First Year Program Guide.)

How to choose your project and practical group

There are four projects to choose from and each choice of project is directly linked to your timetable.

To choose a project, do the following:
  • Read the descriptions of the available projects.
  • Choose the project that looks interesting to you.
  • Note the practical groups that match these project choices and delete any choices that are impossible due to your timetable constraints.
  • Sign-on for your project of choice via MySI-Net by choosing the practical group matching your first choice project.  Practical group sign-on for ENGG1100 opens one week prior to O-Week; check your email for exact dates. If your practical group (project) of choice is full, sign-on to your second choice project (it is easier to change when you have already signed on)

Choosing your project

All projects are equally valid for the course and for your future studies at UQ. Don’t fret too much about the choice. Our recommendation is to go with the project that you are most interested in.
Last year, every student got their first preference. Come back to us if your project is full, and we will see what we can do, as we have some flexibility if a project is oversubscribed. It may be that you have to make a second choice, but we hope to accommodate you all with the project of your choice.

The Projects

A

Autonomous Un-crewed Water Craft

Discipline - Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Mechatronic, Computer
There has been an explosion on an oil rig which has resulted in an oil spill. Your task is to design and build an automated, un-crewed watercraft to quickly recover oil before it disperses into the wider environment. How much will you recover on Demo Day?

B

Water Treatment System

Discipline - Chemical, Biological, Environmental, Materials
Participate in the Engineers Without Borders Challenge (EWB – a non profit aid organisation) to investigate the problem of treating polluted river water to drinking water standard. On Demo Day we will be looking to see how much water you can treat in a limited time and to what standard.

C

Deployable Bridge

Discipline - Civil, Structural, Materials
There has been a disaster and a bridge is needed to cross a chasm. On Demo Day, you will have limited time to carry your bridge to the chasm, assemble it and test its load bearing capacity.

D

Surface Mining Dragline

Discipline - Mining, Mechanical
Commonly used in coal strip mining, a dragline system is used to move material and uncover the coal seam. On Demo Day, your group must operate and test your system for productivity given design and budget parameters.
