The First Year Engineering Learning Centre (FYELC) is situated in Hawken Engineering Building and is a multi-purpose space created to enhance the first-year experience of engineering students.
This learning space has a relaxed, contemporary design and is fitted with the latest in IT and media facilities to facilitate student interaction, learning and teamwork. This in turn promotes the establishment of student networks, and helps to smooth the sometimes difficult transition for students from high school to university.
Working in a team is a necessary skill for engineering students, as the engineering profession is collaborative and interdisciplinary. Feedback has confirmed that 93% of students use the space for group work. Also, a majority of students have used the learning centre to ask a fellow first year they didn't know for help. The FYELC is succeeding in providing opportunities for building social networks with the aim of academic enhancement. Our students enjoy having the FYELC as a place to call “home” while on campus.
The centre is staffed by a full-time First Year Manager and a student enquiries officer. Drop-in tutoring and mentoring are also available in the learning centre during semester. The FYELC has become a benchmark for other universities wishing to improve the first year student experience.
Check out FYELC on Facebook.
Note - 1st Year Engineering students can apply for Swipecard Access through the EAIT Faculty Office.
